# Moving items between sections

> Move a job, project or other item to another section or page, for example to split a long Experience section across two pages.

**Move to** moves one item, such as a job, a school or a project, into another section of the same kind or onto another page. Use it to split a long section across pages, or to group items under their own heading.

## Move an item

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the section">
    In the builder's **Edit** tab, select the section that holds the item, for example **Experience**.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Open the item's menu">
    Select the **Item actions** button (**…**) on the item's row.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Choose a page">
    Hover over **Move to**. It lists each page of your resume as **Page 1**, **Page 2** and so on, followed by **New Page**.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Choose where the item goes">
    Under a page, choose one of the sections listed there, or **New Section** to create one. Choose **New Page** to add a page with a new section on it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The item moves at once. Check the preview to see it in its new place.

## What each destination does

| Destination | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| An existing section | The item is added to the end of that section. Only sections of the same kind are listed, for example other Experience sections for a job. |
| **New Section** | Hiresweep creates a custom section of the same kind on that page, in the main column, with the same title as the section the item came from, and moves the item into it. |
| **New Page** | Hiresweep adds a page at the end of the resume, creates a custom section of the same kind on it with the same title, and moves the item there. |

Nothing is created unless you choose **New Section** or **New Page**.

## Example: split work experience across two pages

<Steps>
  <Step title="Decide what stays on page 1">
    Keep your most recent and relevant roles on page 1.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Move the first older role">
    Open the older role's **Item actions** menu and choose **Move to** > **Page 2** > **New Section**. If your resume has only one page, choose **Move to** > **New Page**.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Move the remaining older roles">
    For each other role, choose **Move to** > **Page 2**, then the Experience section you created in the previous step.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Rename the new section (optional)">
    The new section is listed under **Custom Sections** in the Edit tab. Open its menu, choose **Update** and give it a title such as "Earlier experience".
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  To move a whole section rather than single items, drag it to another page or column in **Design** > **Layout**. See
  [Designing your resume](https://docs.hiresweep.com/guides/designing-your-resume#layout).
</Tip>

## Other ways to reorder items

Within a section, drag an item by its handle (**Drag to reorder**), or use **Move up** and **Move down** in its **Item actions** menu.

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I don't see Move to">
    **Move to** is in the menu of an item, not of a section. Open the section first, then the menu on the item's row.
  </Accordion>
  <Accordion title="The section I want isn't listed">
    Items can only move to sections of the same kind; an Experience item can't go into Projects. To change an item's
    kind, add it again in the section you want and delete the original.
  </Accordion>
  <Accordion title="I moved an item to the wrong place">
    Open the item where it landed and move it back with **Move to**. If an empty custom section was left behind,
    delete it from its menu under **Custom Sections**.
  </Accordion>
